The Republic of Turkey is a country located in Southwest Asia. The Anatolian peninsula comrpises most of its territory, and is situated between the Black Sea on the north and the Mediterranean Sea to south and west, with the Aegean Sea (and Marmara Sea) in between. A small portion of the country's territory (3%) is situated in southeastern Europe, west of the Bosporus straits. Turkey is bordered by Bulgaria (in European Turkey) and Greece on the west, Georgia, Armenia, Azerbaijan and Iran on the east, and Iraq and Syria on the south. Until 1922, the country was the center of the Ottoman Empire.
