Description:

The museum of Epidaurus was built in 1902-1909 by the excavator of the sanctuary, P. Kavvadias, in order to house the partial reconstructions of the most important monuments of the Asklepieion, as well as the most significant excavation finds. The sculptures that had been transferred to the National Archaeological Museum of Athens were replaced by plaster casts.

In 1958 a storeroom was built at the NW end of the archaeological site, and the storerooms of sculpture and pottery to the NE of the museum. In 1971 a new hall was built to the NW of the museum to house the collection of inscriptions which was arranged by M. Mitsos. Since 1992, when the partial reconstruction of the Tholos was dismantled in order to be preserved and studied, a temporary exhibition of the monument has been housed in the second gallery of the museum, along with explanatory plans, photographs and representative architectural parts.

The museum contains collections of building inscriptions, hymns and inscriptions concerning the miraculous cures of Asklepios (Vestibule), Greek and Roman votive sculptures, most of them replaced by plaster casts (A' gallery), votive and honorary inscriptions (A' gallery), reconstructions of the entablature and sima of the Propylaia (A' gallery), of a Doric column from the Temple of Asklepios and the entablature of the Temple of Artemis (B' gallery), various architectural parts of monuments at the sanctuary of Asklepios, pedimental sculptures (B' gallery), a temporary exhibition of architectural parts and sculptures from the Tholos (B' gallery) and a collection of inscriptions displayed under the portico to the south of the main museum building.

Museum Exhibition Photos:
Corinthian capital. It was found in a fill below the foundations of the Tholos, buried there already in antiquity. It is considered to be the "model" of the capitals of the inner colonnade of the Tholos, designed by Polykleitos the Younger.

Reconstruction of the Propylaia. Side wall, part of the inner Corinthian colonnade, front corner with part of the Ionic colonnade. Dated to 300 B.C.

Marble headless statue, probably of goddess Hygeia (Health). Dated to the Hellenistic period.

Fragment of a votive relief. Altar-shaped relief with a Doric frieze (metopes and triglyphs). The metopes are decorated with relief scenes, one of which depicts Asklepios and Athena. Dated to the end of the 4th or the beginning of the 3rd century B.C.

Statuette of a child. It was probably dedicated to the gods by the parents, for saving their child.
